What is SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics)?

SVG is an XML-based image format that describes shapes with math instead of pixels, so it stays sharp at any size and any screen density.

Also called: Scalable Vector Graphics · .svg

SVG files are plain text: paths, circles, rectangles, gradients, and text nodes wrapped in <svg>. That makes them easy to edit in a code editor, style with CSS, and animate with JavaScript or SMIL.

They're ideal for logos, icons, illustrations, and charts — anything vector. They're not suitable for photographs, which need raster formats like JPEG or WebP.

Because SVG can contain scripts, treat SVGs from untrusted sources like any other user-supplied HTML: sanitise before rendering inline.
